La Zenia Beach (Cala Bosque): The Complete Local Guide

La Zenia beach (Cala Bosque) at sunset, Orihuela Costa

📍 La Zenia, Orihuela Costa, Alicante — one of the Costa Blanca’s finest Blue Flag beaches

Ask anyone who knows the southern Costa Blanca where to spend a beach day and La Zenia beach will come up within seconds. Officially called Playa Cala Bosque, this wide sweep of golden sand sits at the heart of Orihuela Costa, between Playa Flamenca and Cabo Roig — and in 2026 it once again flies the Blue Flag, the international award for water quality, safety and services.

We live and host just along this stretch of coast, so this guide covers what actually matters when you visit: where to park, what facilities to expect, where to eat, and how to combine the beach with the area’s other highlights. If you’re planning to stay a few days, our holiday apartments and bungalows in Orihuela Costa are all within a short drive of La Zenia — check availability for your dates here.

🏖️ The Beach Itself: Cala Bosque

La Zenia’s main beach, Cala Bosque, is around 350 metres long and 60 metres wide — big enough that even in high summer you’ll find a spot for your towel. The sand is fine and golden, the seabed shelves gently, and the bay is naturally sheltered, so the water is usually calm and clear. That combination makes it one of the most family-friendly beaches on this coast: small children can paddle safely near the shore while confident swimmers head out further.

Just north of the main beach, towards Playa Flamenca, is Cala Cerrada — a smaller, quieter cove framed by low cliffs. If Cala Bosque feels busy in August, walk five minutes north and you’ll often find Cala Cerrada noticeably calmer. The rocky edges here also make for some of the easiest snorkelling in the area.

✅ Facilities: What’s on the Sand

La Zenia is a fully serviced urban beach, which is exactly what the Blue Flag recognises. In the main season you’ll find:

  • Lifeguards on duty through the summer bathing season
  • Sun loungers and parasols for hire on the sand
  • Showers, foot washes and toilets
  • Beach bars and cafés right by the sand for cold drinks, ice cream and lunch
  • Excellent accessibility — ramps, an extra-wide wooden walkway for wheelchairs and pushchairs, an adapted toilet and shower, and designated disabled parking spaces close to the beach

The accessibility here deserves a special mention: La Zenia is one of the easiest beaches in Orihuela Costa to enjoy with a wheelchair, a pushchair or limited mobility, and that’s a big part of why so many families return year after year.

🚗 Getting There & Parking at La Zenia Beach

La Zenia sits just off the N-332 coast road, roughly 50 minutes from Alicante airport and about 45 minutes from Murcia (Corvera) airport by car. If you’re coming down the AP-7, leave at the Orihuela Costa exit and follow signs for La Zenia.

Parking is free on the streets around the beach, but in July and August the closest spaces fill up by mid-morning. Three local tips:

  • Arrive before 10:30 or come for the gentler late-afternoon sun after 17:00
  • If the seafront streets are full, park a few streets back towards the N-332 — it’s rarely more than a 5–10 minute walk
  • Staying nearby? Leave the car at your accommodation. From our beachfront apartment at Cala Capitán you can simply stroll up the coastal path instead

🚶 The Coastal Walk

Coastal walking path between La Zenia and Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa

The best free thing to do here is the paseo — the coastal footpath that runs along this stretch of shore. Head south from La Zenia and in 20–25 relaxed minutes you’ll round the headland, pass Cala Capitán and drop down to Cabo Roig marina, with its sailing boats and waterfront seafood restaurants — easily the prettiest corner of Orihuela Costa. Cala Capitán is the sheltered cove our guests know well (we’ve written a full guide to Cala Capitán beach here).

Head north instead and the path slips past Cala Cerrada before reaching the beaches of Playa Flamenca in about 15 minutes. Go early in the morning or at sunset and you’ll understand why locals never get tired of this walk.

🍹 Food & Drink Around the Beach

You won’t go hungry at La Zenia. The area immediately around the beach has everything from chiringuito-style beach bars on the sand to family-run Spanish restaurants, tapas bars and international kitchens in the streets behind (our pick of the best restaurants in Orihuela Costa is a good place to start). For a bigger choice, the restaurant terraces at Cabo Roig marina (20 minutes on foot along the coastal path) do some of the best seafood in the area, and La Zenia Boulevard adds dozens more options a few minutes inland.

The dish to order here is arroz a banda — the rice this coast is famous for — with a cold glass of local white wine, as late and as unhurried as the Spanish do it.

🛍️ La Zenia Boulevard: Spain’s Shopping Giant Next Door

Barely five minutes’ drive inland from the beach is La Zenia Boulevard, one of the largest open-air shopping centres on the Costa Blanca, with over 150 shops — Zara, Primark, H&M, Mango and many more — plus restaurants, a cinema, a big supermarket and free parking. It’s open every day and it’s the perfect plan for a scorching afternoon or one of the coast’s rare cloudy days. Beach in the morning, Boulevard in the evening is a classic La Zenia day.

🗓️ Best Time to Visit La Zenia Beach

Orihuela Costa enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, so there’s honestly no bad time. The sea is warm enough for swimming from June to October, peaking in the mid-to-high 20s °C in August. July and August bring the biggest crowds and the liveliest atmosphere; June and September are the sweet spot — hot days, warm sea, easy parking. Even in mid-winter the beach is a favourite for long sunny walks, and many of the beachfront cafés stay open year-round.

If you fancy exploring beyond the sand, our guide to the 9 best things to do in Orihuela Costa covers the pink lake, the old city of Orihuela, golf and more — and the famous Torrevieja pink lagoon is only a short drive away.
