Villamartin Golf: Course Guide, Green Fees & Where to Stay

📍 Villamartín, Orihuela Costa, Alicante — the golfing heart of the southern Costa Blanca

If you’ve ever searched for golf on the Costa Blanca, you’ve come across Villamartin. Opened in 1972 and designed by the American architect Robert Dean Putman, it’s the best-known course in the area — a classic, tree-lined 18-hole, par-72 layout that has hosted European Tour golf, including the Mediterranean Open back in 1994.

We host guests minutes from the fairways — our bungalows in Los Balcones are under ten minutes’ drive from the first tee — so this guide covers what visiting golfers actually ask us: what the course is like, how green fees work, which other courses are worth adding to your trip, and where to stay. Planning a golf break? See our holiday homes near the courses or check availability for your dates.

⛳ The Course: What to Expect at Villamartin

Villamartin is a mature, Mediterranean parkland course: fairways lined with old pines and olive trees, elevated greens, and enough strategically placed hazards to keep you honest. It’s not the longest course on the coast, and that’s part of its character — accuracy beats brute force here. Wayward hitters will spend the afternoon among the trees; steady players who plot their way around are rewarded.

A few things regulars will tell you:

  • The greens are the defence — many are raised, with run-offs that punish a lazy approach. Take an extra moment reading them.
  • The layout is compact — many visitors walk it comfortably, and buggies are available if you’d rather ride, especially in summer.
  • History is part of the experience — this is one of the courses that put the Costa Blanca on Europe’s golfing map.

💶 Green Fees & Booking at Villamartin Golf

Villamartin uses dynamic pricing: the rate depends on the season, the day and the tee time. Rather than quote numbers that change weekly, our advice is simple — check live rates and book directly on the official Villamartin Golf Club site, where you’ll also find current offers and twilight slots.

Local booking tips from our golfing guests:

  • Book ahead from October to May — that’s peak golf season here, and the popular morning slots go fast
  • In July and August, take the earliest tee time you can get and finish before the hottest part of the day
  • Clubs, trolleys and buggies — hire is available at the course; check options and reserve with the club when you book your tee time

🏌️ Other Golf Courses Near Villamartin

One of the best things about basing yourself in Orihuela Costa is that Villamartin is just the start — with Las Ramblas and Campoamor practically next door, a five-round week without repeating a course is easy:

  • Las Ramblas — Villamartin’s dramatic neighbour, carved through pine-covered ravines. Shorter, but one of the most spectacular (and unforgiving) layouts on the coast.
  • Real Club de Golf Campoamor — a spacious, resort-style parkland course a few minutes south, generally kinder to the scorecard.
  • Lo Romero — a modern favourite, famous for its island-green finishing hole.
  • Las Colinas — the area’s upscale championship course, regularly ranked among Spain’s best.
  • La Finca — another quality championship layout inland at Algorfa.

Drive times from Villamartin

  • Las Ramblas golf — ~5 min
  • Real Club de Golf Campoamor — ~10 min
  • Lo Romero golf — ~15 min
  • Las Colinas golf — ~20 min
  • La Finca golf (Algorfa) — ~20 min

🍽️ The 19th Hole: Villamartin Plaza

A two-minute hop from the course, Villamartin Plaza is where many golf days end: a lively, palm-lined square ringed with restaurants, tapas bars and terraces, with live music on summer evenings. You’ll find everything from Spanish classics to steakhouses and curry houses — and plenty of cold beer for recounting the round. We compare all 15 venues, with price bands and booking tips, in our guide to restaurants in Villamartin Plaza.

📅 When to Come for Golf

The southern Costa Blanca enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, and golf here is genuinely a year-round sport. October to May is prime time: mild, dry days perfect for 18 holes, which is exactly why so many northern European golfers winter here. Summer golf works too — go early, hydrate, and spend the afternoon by the pool or at La Zenia beach, about fifteen minutes away.

Travelling with non-golfers? Between the beaches, the pink lagoon of Torrevieja and everything else Orihuela Costa offers, nobody will be bored while you’re on the course.

❓ Villamartin Golf FAQs

How far is Villamartin golf course from Alicante airport?

About 45–50 minutes by car via the AP-7. Murcia (Corvera) airport is also within easy reach from the other direction. For every option — the direct bus, taxis and pre-booked transfers — see our guide to getting here from Alicante Airport.

Is Villamartin suitable for beginners or high handicappers?

Yes — it’s a fair, playable course. The trees punish wild driving, so higher handicappers should favour position over distance and keep an eye on pace of play.

Do I need to book tee times in advance?

In peak season (October to May), yes — book as early as you can, especially for morning slots. Summer is more flexible, but early times are still the ones worth having.

When is the best time of year for golf at Villamartin?

October to May, when the weather is mild and dry. Summer golf is doable with an early tee time and a shady afternoon plan.

Can I hire clubs at Villamartin?

Hire options (clubs, trolleys, buggies) are available at the course — check availability and reserve with the club when you book your tee time.
