Opened in 1972 and designed by the American architect Robert Dean Putman, it’s the best-known course in the area — a classic, tree-lined 18-hole, par-72 layout that has hosted European Tour golf, including the Mediterranean Open back in 1994.

Villamartin is a mature, Mediterranean parkland course: fairways lined with old pines and olive trees, elevated greens, and enough strategically placed hazards to keep you honest. It’s not the longest course on the coast, and that’s part of its character — accuracy beats brute force here. Wayward hitters will spend the afternoon among the trees; steady players who plot their way around are rewarded.

The southern Costa Blanca enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, and golf here is genuinely a year-round sport. October to May is prime time: mild, dry days perfect for 18 holes, which is exactly why so many northern European golfers winter here. Summer golf works too — go early, hydrate, and spend the afternoon by the pool or at La Zenia beach, about fifteen minutes away.

Yes — it’s a fair, playable course. The trees punish wild driving, so higher handicappers should favour position over distance and keep an eye on pace of play.
